Animation of the Day: Carved Man/Bird Effigy

by Bernard K. Means, Director of the Virtual Curation Laboratory

864_Bird_ManToday’s animation is a replica of a sandstone figurine depicts a man on one side and a bird on the other. This figurine is on loan from the Virginia Museum of Natural History (VMNH), and was donated to the museum by the Virginia Military Institute. There is currently no information on the figurine’s age, place of origin, or cultural affiliation. Lauren Volkers of the Virtual Curation Laboratory created this replica from a scan of another replica that was created from a mold made by Ray Vodden, Research Technician at VMNH. A video produced for Instagram by Archaeology in the Community in the Virtual Curation Laboratory features Lauren discussing the object, using a printed version made with a MakerBot Replicator.  The InstaGram video can be found here: http://instagram.com/p/i2eq5lqqVx/#
