Animated Object of the Day: Giant Ground Sloth Left Metacarpal from the Virginia Museum of Natural History

by Bernard K. Means, Director of the Virtual Curation Laboratory (VCL)

Today ‘s animation is a cast of a giant ground sloth (Megalonyx jeffersonii) left metacarpal from the collections of the  Virginia Museum of Natural History (VMNH) that was found in Saltville, Virginia. This element was scanned so that it could be mirrored and then printed, since the comparable element from the opposite side of the giant ground sloth was missing. VCL Intern Hannah Lickey is leading this scanning effort and researching the giant ground sloth. Some of the research she is doing in the darker parts of the internet have turned up some strange ideas people have about this extinct mammal. Some people who feel the ground sloth is still alive, and may be mistaken by some for bigfoot, which inspired this cartoon by Hannah.
