Animation of the Day: World War II Veteran Russell Scott

by Bernard K. Means, Director of the Virtual Curation Laboratory

Today is the anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor that ushered the United States into the global conflict that was World War II.  Today’s animations were created using a Sense 3D scanner at the Virginia War Memorial of World War II veteran Russell Scott, a 94-year old volunteer at the memorial.  Scott survived his plane being shot down over Italy and imprisonment in German POW camps.  The two scans–one of him seated, and the other of his head–were merged and will be printed to the scale of a model of a B-25  Mitchell bomber, where a printed replica of a seated Scott will be placed on the tail of the plane.  When Scott exited his damaged plane, he perched briefly on the plane’s tail.  Details of this harrowing escape and our scanning efforts of Scott can be found here.
